We briefly discussed the topic of brandable vs. descriptive names here. Personally, I would decide based on the project and the resources at hand. Namely;

I believe memorability is the most important factor. Therefore, if I find an affordable generic domain, it would definitely be my first choice.

When you find an address like somethingworld.com, don’t assume it is highly memorable. Because there are dozens of other names of the same quality like somethingland, somethinghome, somethingbasket, something.co etc. On top of that, when you add generic names like something.com, .net, .org, .gen.tr, you will struggle quite a bit in the competition.

Some sectors require professionalism. Since companies with brand domains have become quite popular in recent years, they project a more professional image. When choosing a brand, you don’t have the limitation of it having to be meaningful; your chances of finding a memorable domain with a .com extension are very high. However, to etch a brand domain into people’s minds requires a lot of advertising and online exposure, which requires money and effort.

On the other hand, finding a name that explains the purpose of the project can also be very advantageous. If you are going to venture into a business that hasn’t been done before, or is not widely known, these types of names are more suitable. For example; you are going to run a car rental business but you will deliver the car to the customer’s address. Names that explain the work you do, like mycaratmydoor, sendrentalcar, etc., can be much more meaningful.
