My Alexa global ranking appears as 0 (zero) and my website is 1 year old. What could be the reason?
It makes more sense to check from here. I think it will either update or there seems to be an issue. If you want, install the Alexa toolbar etc. on your PC and try it with auto-refresh etc. for 3-5 days.

Alexa ranking isn’t very important. The site will take its place in the rankings once it reaches a certain point anyway.

I bought an Alexa package just so it would rise higher in the rankings.
Which package did you buy, did it go up then?
I bought the Basic package. In Austria, we rose to 7,000 from having no ranking at all.
It is more effective because it collects all data whether the Toolbar is used or not.
Alexa Support had given the following answer to a question of ours:

The country compares your website against every other site receiving traffic from that country based on the number of visitors and pageviews to your site. Since you chose to use Certified metrics to rank your site the visitors and pageviews are measured directly from your website. If you don’t use certified metrics to rank your site, then the visitors and pageviews are estimated based on data from our panel of toolbar users.
The Certified country rank has gone down because we saw little to no traffic to your site for most of November. Please see this page for detailed traffic information: Alexa .
Alexa rank is not a criterion in Google’s eyes, but it can be good data for tracking your progress.
